(PDF) North Carolina For Teachers And Learners

CC BY-NC-ND
Rating
0.0 stars

A book-length resource for teachers and students to learn about North Carolina. Over 400 pages of teacher resources (including rubrics and answers) and student pages provide a greater depth and breadth to North Carolina studies than any other resource for middle and secondary students. These sections consist of lesson materials for students related to North Carolina. The lessons contained herein are intended for students in middle school, chiefly eighth grade, and are aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. This project is not intended as new research on North Carolina. Instead, it is a compilation of available resources made accessible for today's youth. Research and data from disparate sources have been distilled into discrete units for helping students understand North Carolina - the state, its peoples, and its place in the world. This project is intended to introduce students and teachers to North Carolina and help them develop interest in and appreciation for this diverse and fascinating state. Many pages are also translated into Spanish. Individual components are uploaded separately in both English and Spanish for easier reference. This work is modular; each section can be used in isolation if desired to support instruction in Social Studies, math, English, or other topics.

Presidential Portraits

The nation’s only complete collection of presidential portraits outside the White House, the America’s Presidents exhibition lies at the heart of the National Portrait Gallery’s mission to tell the American story through the individuals who have shaped it; these models are a selection of Presidential sculptures from the exhibit.

The Smithsonian 3D Program is a small group of technologists working within the Smithsonian Institution's Digitization Program Office. We focus on developing solutions to further the Smithsonian's mission of “the increase and diffusion of knowledge” through the use of three-dimensional scanning technology, analysis tools, and our distribution platform.

This work is already transforming core functions of our museums. Researchers in the field can now come back not only with specimens, but also 3D data documenting entire sites. Curators and educators are using 3D data as the basis for telling stories and sending students on quests of discovery. Conservators are using 3D data to track the condition of a collection item over time using 3D deviation analysis tools, showing exactly what changes have occurred to an object.

Using Wonders text and their Reading/Writing Companion, students will learn why people immigrate to new places. Students will learn the difference in primary and secondary resources and why it is important to know where to get information. After reading texts from Wonders, students will use Google Earth to explore the places mentioned in the text and complete a Padlet discussing what they notice and wonder about the different locations. Students will be given an interactive note taking sheet on Jamboard to utilize as they read “The Castle on Hester Street”. Students will once again use Google Earth to explore Ellis Island as they begin to read “Next Stop, America!” and will complete a PearDeck text feature hunt. This will lead to a formative assessment where students will use FlipGrid to create a journal entry portraying themselves as an immigrant coming to America in the 1800’s.
