Doo Wop's musical and social roots point to a long history of vocal harmony in American culture, particularly in African-American communities. Social singing provided entertainment in barbershops, bars, schools, churches, theaters, and other communal spaces. Some of the musical precedents students will consider in this lesson include the barbershop quartets that flourished from the 1890s through World War I; the Pop vocal groups such as the Mills Brothers that topped the charts in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s; and the Gospel singers who made harmonizing a spiritual practice throughout the early twentieth century.

Students will use their knowledge of genres of literature to create posters for disply in the library or classroom to use as a reference.

Lesson focuses on building multisyllabic words using affixes, while troubleshooting nonsense words created and what happens when information is not transferred correctly.

In this lesson students work in collaborative groups to collect, represent, and interpret numerical data that they generate by using Sphero robots to knock down bowling pins!

Students will collaborate with partners to develop body paragraphs of an argumentative essay based on informational texts read in class.

The pairs' paragraphs will be combined to create the body paragraphs of an essay. Students will then work on sequencing the paragraphs, adding transitions, and providing intro/conclusion paragraphs.

Having studied the archetypes of heros, students will be asked to complete a collaborative essay of a hero's journey utilizing narrative writing skills, the stages of the hero's journey, and elements, such as supernatural beings or creatures, found in mythology.  Students will bring the events of their hero’s journey to life by using dialogue, descrition, transition phrases, and sensory language.   Using a hyper-doc students will work in groups to create their collaborative story.If you want an option for students to have their own individual work have them independently complete Phase 4 of the hyper-doc.

Students in the OCS program can learn real world work skills by helping to create an inventory of Makerspace items using a spreadsheet and how to work together as a team.  In this lesson they also can use a Cricut machine and Design Space software to create lables for items in the Makerspace.  

The focus of the lesson is showing how information is broken into smaller pieces and transmitted through the internet through the use of vocabulary building skills, using prefixes and base words to build and break apart multisyllabic words.

Introducing the genre of Fantasy to students.  They will gain an understanding of the content and produce their own story for the product.  Modifications can be made on the length of the story the are to write.  There can also be a more in depth conversation on the genre by older groups.

Challenge: Make a sentence using each word in row 1. Challenge students to make sentences for each row and column in the grid.

This Powerpoint introduces archetypes found in literature, tv shows, and movies.  Brief explanation for each of the selected archetypes and examples are presented.  There is an application assignment where students will find additional archetype examples and write a brief essay demonstrating understanding of archetype.

In this lesson, students use their knowledge of sound energy to create a soundproof box to protect a secret code word! Students measure and graph decibels to determine how well their boxes omit sounds!

In this lesson students create large story maps to retell and familiar text. Students record themselves and place QR codes along the story map. Students then code Sphero Robots, dressed as main characters, to make their way through each part of the story.
