Students will listen to a close reading of The 3 Little Pigs over the course of 3 days.  (Many versions are accessible via NC Kids Digital Library.  Teacher discretion as to the story version.  Personal copy or online versions can be used.) After each read aloud, students will have the opportunity to engage in The Engineering Design Process to create a new dwelling using materials of varying physical properties.  Students will write to tell about their new dwelling design using sentence frames and an anchor chart for support.  Finally, students will present their new dwellings and read their informational writing to reflect their knowledge of physical properties.  Student informational writing should reflect physical properties such as size, color, shape, texture, weight and flexibility per the NC Kindergarten Science Standards.

In this lesson, students will read 'Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon', 'Odd Velvet', 'Hooray for Wodney Wat', and several other books. The students will study the characters feelings and compare the characters. Students will have activities that involve emotions and feelings.

The story of "The Beauty and the Beast" has captivated us for many years.  It is fun to read or watch a video of.  But did it really happen?  It is fun to compare fiction and nonfiction.  Most students will in their backgrounds relate to a story like this.  Also it is fun for students to learn and then survey others based on what they have learned.

Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Express Ourselves: An Inquiry into the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Students will investigate how color communicates and inspires.  This is a transdisciplinary IB unit that integrates literacy, math, science, and social studies.

This lesson plan features an example of a cumulative literary experience or “literature unit” structured around a text set made up of conceptually-related fiction and nonfiction for reading aloud and for independent reading.

Beginning with a comparative study of selected, illustrated retellings of the traditional folktale “Little Red Riding Hood,” including versions from several different cultures, this literature unit continues with a study of modern revisions of this well-known tale. After students have an opportunity to explore similarities and differences among the retellings and revisions, they are introduced to fiction and nonfiction texts featuring wolves in order to provide them with a different perspective of the “villain” in the "Little Red Riding Hood" tales. The unit culminates in a class-written version of the folktale.

Students engage with the text by talking back to characters in Cinderella, dramatizing events in Bubba the Cowboy Prince, inserting themselves into the story of Little Red Riding Hood, and critiquing and controlling story elements in Little Red Cowboy Hat. After comparing and contrasting Little Red Riding Hood and Little Red Cowboy Hat, students plan and create an original fractured tale.

Students listen as the teacher reads different picture books by Ezra Jack Keats. Following the story, the students undertake class discussion and compare the different stories and plots using a story mapping graphic organizer. As a culminating project, students choose their own characters, define a problem and a solution appropriate for their characters, and then write their own problem-solving stories.

Students will read books about families and make text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections using those books. Students gain a deeper understanding of a text when they make authentic connections. Beginning with a read-aloud of Donald Crews' "Bigmama's", the instructor introduces and models the strategy of making connections. Read-alouds of "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats and "The Relatives Came" by Cynthia Rylant are followed by activities that help students learn to apply each type of text connection when responding to texts. After sharing and discussing connections in a Think-Pair-Share activity, students plan and write a piece describing a personal connection to one of the texts.

Students hear one or more versions of The Gingerbread Man fairy tale. Students will then use illustrations from the text or those provided to sequence and retell the story. By using different versions, students compare the adventures of characters in familiar stories.

Students build a parachute that can travel quickly and safely to the ground.

After reading Little Red Riding Hood, students will engineer a basket that will hold 50 unifix cubes while walking 100 steps without breaking.

Read the story, The Gingerbread Man. Discuss the plot and what happens in the beginning, middle and end. Discuss an alternate ending. Guide the students to think of another way he could safely get across the river. Then get the students to work together in groups of two to build rafts using straws that will float on water and hold up a penny that’s represents the fox.

In this lesson, a combination of children's literature, learning centers, and activities focus on learning about the letter m. Students will learn about phonics by participating in an integrated array of activities, including reading, writing, mathematics, music, art, and technology.

* This unit is an adaptation of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Kindergarten Curriculum.  PLTW, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that develops STEM curricula for US schools.  The source material is copyrighted and schools or districts are required to pay an annual participation fee and agree to the implementation terms of use.  With this in mind, only the adaptations will be explored in this unit document and it is intended to be used only to supplement the purchased PLTW resource.

The Project Lead the Way model uses ebook stories to introduce an engineering problem for students to solve.  Students then work through a series of hands-on challenges as they learn the unit concepts, such as the design process and key terms such as "structure" and "function".  This unit's activities include:

1 - Design and build a beanstalk that can support a small object, inspired by Jack and the Beanstalk.

2 - Design and build a straw (toothpick), stick (popsicle stick) or brick (clay) house that can withstand the wind current from a wolf (a strong fan), inspired by The Three Little PIgs.

3 - Design and build a new a new kind of paintbrush.
