In this lesson, students take turns taking home a book bag that includes a stuffed toy, a book to read with their families, art supplies, a topic to discuss, and a journal to complete as a family. The students then return the bag the following day and share their entries with the class. After every student has taken the bag home, the journal is bound into a book for the classroom library. The goal is to invite parents to join their children in these literacy activities.

Flipgrid is a fantastic FREE Tool where students can create a video presence to support collaboration and their learning. Students will use FlipGrid to share information on any given topic of your choice. It is a platform where they can communicate ideas and eventually collaborate with others.

The "I Grow" activities in this lesson will help students understand the abstract concept of time passing. Students will listen as the book When I Was Little by Jamie Lee Curtis is read aloud. They will then write and illustrate a book about themselves using a predictable pattern of text such as, "When I was little, I ____________. Now I ____________."

After reading the book Clouds by Gail Saunders-Smith the students will get into groups of 2 to create their own clouds, using slime, and then discussing the type created, and turn and talk with a different team.

This unit was created by the Rethink Education Content Development Team. This course is aligned to the NC Standards for Kindergarten ELA in Speaking and Listening.

In this lesson, students will listen to a familiar story with repetitive lines that the children can remember. They will make puppets and retell the story in small groups with an adult volunteer or an older child.

Students will work in small groups to plan and create a Makey Makey project showing the stages of The Grand Old Tree, hence focusing on key details from the text. Students will also write about what happens to the three during different seasons, using details. Text is found within Wonders Unit 5, week 2. 

This chapter is all about history. In future grades students begin to learn about the history of our state, our country, and our world. In the early grades however, students learn about history through a much smaller lens. In first grade it’s about families.

This chapter introduces students to history by exploring the ideas of past, present, and future. Students learn about timelines and eventually construct their own timeline of important events in their lives. Through it all they learn about how people learn about the past.

You may be tempted to skip this short section. It is brief in comparison to previous chapters but it is ultimately one of the most important. Students have spent their entire class period up to this point exploring and learning more about foundational social studies concepts. This is the chapter that puts it all together.

This document provides a description of what each standard means a student will know, understand and be able to do. The "unpacking" of the standards done in this document is an effort to answer a simple question, "What does this standard mean that a student must know and be able to do?" and to ensure the description is helpful, specific and comprehensive for educators.

In Wonders Units 5, 6, 7 teachers will be working on all writing areas (narrative, expository & persuasive), but each Unit will have at least one week on Persuasive/Opinion Writing.  Therefore, Unit 5 & 6 will provide background knowledge on recognizing the difference between an opinion and fact.  Students will be able to learn key components within an opinion statement and begin to develop & write their own opinion statements.  This will provide practice for their end of Unit 7 Opinion Writing piece for Kindergarten. Students will participate in small groups to identify, form and program the route to opinions on the BeeBot map.

After reading books about how/why the seasons change, higher-level students will read a fiction book that incorporates season changes and effects of those changes with their parents for homework.  They will then answer questions about the changes and the effects of the changes and bring those answers to class so that students may engage in a discussion seminar.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.

Introduction to Seesaw for K and 1st grade level speech/language groups .  Seesaw is a student driven digital portfolio, to share student work with parents..  I will be using Seesaw to improve parent involvement with speech homework (send copies of practice words, activities, etc.)  as an additional means of communication (add video clips of what we are up to in speech class), as well as a motivational tool for students to view their work and progress (show their progress over time, eg., an articulation sample for beginning of the year and end of the year).

This resource contains extensions, assessments/reflections, and five different session ideas to teach students how to: use prior knowledge to categorize words as parts of speech; use reading skills to create sentences with word cards; discover the required elements of a complete sentence by manipulating everyday words; share and learn new vocabulary; use descriptive words and phrases to complete complex sentences; and demonstrate reading comprehension through illustrations.

This teacher's curriculum guide presents strategies for engaging readers before, during, and after reading the book. It also provides extension strategies to further students’ understanding through analysis of verbs and narrative writing tasks.
