Students will demonstrate the amount of energy found in a peanut by burning it and measuring temperature change in water heated by the burning peanut.
This lesson sequence is designed to exemplify an argumentation approach to practical work, using a classification framework. In these lessons students see for themselves that it is possible to group chemicals with similar properties – and that there are some chemicals which do not fit easily into a group. Students carry out a practical activity in one lesson and in the next try to group the chemicals according to the results of their investigations. At the end the students are told the four main groups that chemists use to classify chemicals and they try placing the chemicals they have been using into these groups.
This is a Problem-Based Learning lesson. Problem-based learning is meant to provide students with real-world problems that more closely mirror what they would experience in an actual situation. There are many benefits of PBL such as, decision-making, team-based skills, and self-directed learning. With this type of learning, there is not only one correct answer nor is there a single solution path. The end result should be that these real life experiences will show deep, meaningful learning.
In this lesson students will learn about displacement, velocity, and acceleration based on the science from the movies "October Sky" and "Harry Potter". Students will also learn about gravity and projectile motion.
Students will explore the boiling points and freezing points of water and alcohol, including the differences between salt water and fresh water. Students will also examine water's ability to store heat.
Students will conduct research and engage in simple activities to understand how sound travels and to discover the difference between transverse and longitudinal waves.

Students are to measure the distance and record. The teacher will measure time using the stopwatch.
This chapter from the online textbook Everything Science discusses classification of matter and outlines the differences between elements, compounds, and mixtures. Each chapter comes with video lessons and explanations which help bring the ideas and concepts to life.
Students will explore the three forms of radiation and use a geiger counter to measure radiation levels for various objects and beta and gamma producing samples.
Students explore how the quantity of a radioactive isotope changes over time as it decays. They choose one of four radioactive isotopes and simulate the passage of time. The amount remaining is displayed graphically and numerically.
Students will simulate radioactive decay by pouring small candies from a cup and counting which candies fall with the manufacturer's mark down or up. Then continue by predicting and successively counting the number of "side-up" candies. By the end of the lesson, students will understand that rates of decay of unstable nuclei can be measured, that the exact time that a certain nucleus will decay cannot be predicted, and that it takes a very large number of nuclei to find the rate of decay.
Students model radioactive decay by rolling a large number of di and removing all di that turn up as a 5 or 6 on each roll. Students will collect and graph data.
Students will use a model to better understand radioactive decay and how to determine the half-life of a radioactive element.
In this activity, students learn about radioactivity, the rate at which an isotope decays, and the concept of half-life. They will count and record the number of decayed candium atoms and graph the results.
Students model the process of radioactive decay.
Students will make predictions about the solid and liquid states of matter. They will meet both math and science standards in measurement and physical science.
After learning about types of simple machines, students create one with recyclables in order to 'rescue' a small figurine by moving it 10 feet.
