This resource accompanies our Rethink 2nd Grade ELA course. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.

In this lesson, students create autobiographies by taking photographs that represent their life and writing paragraph captions. Students will then publish and electronic version to share with others.

It is very important that students learn early on to respect the device they are working on as well as be safe when they are using it. The teacher and students will have a classroom discussion on responsibility on how to take care of the device, keep it safe and themselves while using it.

In this lesson, students will study four different versions of the Cinderella story. As a group students will identify the good characters, mean characters, problem, and solution of each story. Story elements will be written down on a large poster board and categorized so students can draw identify patterns and differences. Then, students will work in small groups of seven to identify the main parts of the traditional story. Each student will choose a part in the story to illustrate. After illustrations are complete students will practice retelling their part of the story. Students will then scan in their illustrations and use the program, Movie Maker, to format their group's story. Students will record their portion of the retelling with a microphone.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and describe the function of external hardware, such as desktop computers, laptop computers, tablet devices, monitors, keyboards, mice, and printers. The students will be able to explain each component's function and how it works together.

Creating a story is not an easy task. What should I write about? Who will the characters be in my story? What will happen? These are all questions that every author needs to answer before their story can take shape. Storybird is an online community that provides original artwork to inspire students. The artwork sparks their imagination and supports story creation. Collaboration can take place when students invite others to work on their story with them.

Students will create posters based upon graded readers and present the posters to classmates. The lesson provides a template for the posters, instructions for presentations, and tips on student notetaking. This resource supports English language development for English Language Learners.

Flipgrid is a fantastic FREE Tool where students can create a video presence to support collaboration and their learning. Students will use FlipGrid to share information on any given topic of your choice. It is a platform where they can communicate ideas and eventually collaborate with others.

In this lesson, students will draw and write about a shared experience (e.g. trip, class performace); students will audio record their writing on VoiceThread.

This lesson accompanies the North Carolina children's book, "My NC from A to Z" which celebrates pride of place, and creates connections to North Carolina's rich African American heritage. In this lesson, students will compare and contrast two to five North Carolina African American visual artists by making art and Venn diagrams.

Students will demonstrate learning by designing a slide using a collaborative presentation tool, such as Google Slides. Students may choose to use words, images, GIFS, or a combination of these in order to showcase their understanding of a given topic

With this unit, students learn how specialization creates interdependence and that exchanging goods and services creates interdependence. Students describe examples of specialists in a community and the interdependence which exists between them. They also analyze a situation where interdependence exists between countries and explain what might happen if one of those countries chooses to become independent of the others.

Students listen to a read-aloud of the Eric Carle picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Then they watch a time-lapse video of the monarch butterfly life cycle and create their own picture books.
