In this activity, students are given a series of fill-in-the-blank questions about the different parts of speech. A word bank has been included on each slide that contains all the words that will be used to fill in the blanks.  

This is a brainstorming activity to gauge the depth and breadth of your student's poetic elements knowledge.You can use this as a pre assessment or formative assessment depending on your instructional needs.The slides can be changed depending on your grade level standards and the literary or poetic elements that you are focusing on in your instruction.

The focus of the lesson is showing how information is broken into smaller pieces and transmitted through the internet through the use of vocabulary building skills, using prefixes and base words to build and break apart multisyllabic words.

This information was gathered while attending a break-out session at the 2021 ASCD Annual Conference. Dr. Teresa Hill presented this information based on her analysis of student-teacher and student-student interactions after they resumed in-person learning. She is currently the Superintendent of South Holland District 151 in South Holland, IL.

3 x 3 Vocabulary Challenge

Use within any subject

Need a bank of at least 10 words from a similar subject.

Students will put 9 words randomly in the 3x3 grid.

Challenge: Make a sentence using each word in row 1. Challenge students to make sentences for each row and column in the 3x3 grid.

Can be done collaboratively, or individual. Nice to mix it up!

The first day and week of school is key for students to feel welcome in their classes and to your class. The activities planned from the first day onward are integral in making connections. This initial assignment is designed to help students in your class explore their voice, ability, and personal identity.

Students will build background and show understanding about government elections at the local, state, and national levels in the United States.

Students will write, revise, and edit an informational piece to demonstrate mastery of the topic of elections incorporating key academic content vocabulary.

Students will create a PPT with a teacher's model to demonstrate understanding and mastery of key content area vocabulary words.

Students will complete activities during independent work time or literacy stations. Provides a QR code for students to listen to stories (2 non-fiction and 1 fiction) about elections. After they listen to the stories they choose one of the non-fiction texts to write facts about, find the main idea and key details, and define new words

This resource is useful for newcomers, particularly the first days that they start school because they need to learn vocabulary about objects in the classroom, things that they will see every day. 

A great resource to introduce, review, or prepare students for the Thanksgiving holiday. This is an activity students should be able to do completely independently and some follow-up/partner/whole-group activities are also suggested. Students will need an iPad to do the activity.

Learn all about action verbs, linking verbs, helping verbs, verb tenses, and multiple verbs in compound sentences with Scruff the dog in this interactive tutorial.

Attached you will find two vocabuary activities: 1) A Scavenger Hunt to promote word consciousness and real world application of vocabulary, and 2) Synonym Slides to promote creativity and allow students to visually represent vocabulary words, while building vocabulary through the use of synonyms. Students will partner up with another to write a second sentence.

Student will then independently write their own sentence and then share with another partner.
