Intentional planning for read alouds is essential. This template demonstrates how each reading of a book focuses on specific literacy skills. Completed examples using this template are available on #GoOpenNC. A fiction example is shared for Bear Snores on by Karma Wilson and an example for informational text is shared for Giant Pandas by Gail Gibbons.

The focus of the lesson is showing how information is broken into smaller pieces and transmitted through the internet through the use of vocabulary building skills, using prefixes and base words to build and break apart multisyllabic words.

Students read about the establishment of the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument and discuss why it is important to preserve the Mariana Trench and surrounding area.

In this activity, students will use a magnifying class to search and find letters and then use the voice recording tool to record themselves saying the name of the letter. 

In this activity, students will use the recording tool to record themselves reading a word and counting how many syllables it has. Then, students will use the text tool to type how many syllables the given word has. 

This is a remix of the original resource Closed Word Sort: oi / oy by Elaine Shobert.
This remix focuses on grade 2 standards, but can be modified. The resource will take the learner through a series of four interactive activities and an assessment. The activities can be modified to fit vowels, vowel teams, word endings, etc.

Students will build background and show understanding about government elections at the local, state, and national levels in the United States.

Students will write, revise, and edit an informational piece to demonstrate mastery of the topic of elections incorporating key academic content vocabulary.

Students will create a PPT with a teacher's model to demonstrate understanding and mastery of key content area vocabulary words.

Students will complete activities during independent work time or literacy stations. Provides a QR code for students to listen to stories (2 non-fiction and 1 fiction) about elections. After they listen to the stories they choose one of the non-fiction texts to write facts about, find the main idea and key details, and define new words

Students learn about the three ocean light zones, make predictions about deep-sea resources, and read about those resources and their value to science and businesses.

Students will read a fictional text and use details from the story to retell the beginning, middle and end. Students will then create scenes that represent the beginning, middle, and end. Students will then program their Sphero to travel to each scene. Students will also input their summary into their program using the speak command.

 Students will participate in small groups to program their BeeBot to find 2 letter S blends, 3 letter S blends, S blend slides, S blend words, reading them and/or marking them to reinforce Reading Horizons foundational skills found within Chapter 2 for Kindergarten. Teacher will place BeeBot cards under the mat (can differentiate # of cards depending on level)Students draw a card to determine the number of (letters, slides, words) they’ll program.Students who are not programming can read the letters, slides, words.Students who are not programming can also sort the cards that are placed under the mat and add to the recording sheet.  After sorting, students can also mark the words. 

In this activity, students play a board game in which players try to ensure the survival of their animal species while dealing with problems (such as habitat destruction, pollution, or natural disasters) the animals encounter during the game. Prior to the game, the book Brother Eagle, Sister Sky by Susan Jeffers should be read aloud to the students and used to engage student thinking about human and environmental impact on animal survival.

Kindergarten Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy, RF.K.3.C   Read common high-frequency words by sightLearning Objective for student: I can read my sight words!This tool provides 7 lists of kindergarten sight words that can be color-coded to keep track of student growth. Checklists for assessment and progress monitoring are provided as well as cards to be hole punched for each individual child. The teacher can use the activities within this resource for small groups that are working on learning sight words. The intervention strategy, Simultaneous Oral Spelling, is also provided with step-by-step directions and should be used with any student who struggles to learn sight words through the typical reading and building activities. 

"2-4-6-8, students will be spelling great" in this lesson that teaches the y rule for adding suffixes through cheering the spelling of words aloud, word sorts, and writing stories.

In this lesson, students will be able to identify details from a text involving feeling words, emotions and reactions. Students will be able to express how they would feel in a situation and what zone they would be in.

In this lesson students create large story maps to retell and familiar text. Students record themselves and place QR codes along the story map. Students then code Sphero Robots, dressed as main characters, to make their way through each part of the story.

In this lesson from Expeditionary Learning, students will ask and answer questions about My Librarian Is a Camel by Margariet Ruurs. They will learn how to effectively participate in conversations with peers and adults. Students will engage in Think-Pair-Share and Carousel protocols to begin addressing details they see in photographs. This will help guide them as they draw details from exemplar texts.
